The characteristics of AstangaVinyasa

The Yoga Kururna is said to have described three series of postures: Yoga Chikitsa (yoga therapy) which we know as the “Primary Series”: Nadi Sodhcma (channel cleansing) known as the “Intermediate series”: and &him Bhaga (divine stability) which can be broken down into four parts and is known as the “Advanced Series”. Postures within each series are connected by specific movements that act as counterpoises. known as “viny asa”. These three series probably represent the most physically challenging type of yoga practice ever constructed. This book only shows the postures of the Primary Series.

Astanga yoga started to spread to America in the l970s when students studied in India with Shri K Pattabhi Jois (see pages 14—15) and returned home to teach his techniques to others.
